DOGS IMPROVE THANKS TO PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical therapy is an increasingly popular technique to help dogs with ailments like degenerative joint disease. At the Animal Rehabilitation Clinic in North Aurora, Illinois, Cookie, an energetic Boston terrier and Marce Walt, a golden retriever, use a treadmill, obstacle course and water tank to combat the disease.
Physical therapist Carol Jurca usually starts her patients' sessions with a few minutes of disthermy, in which a machine pulses electromagnetic waves through the injured tissue, reducing inflammation and increasing blood circulation. Next come exercises that target the injured joint, along with treadmill walking to build strength. There's also a water treadmill, a moving rubber belt enclosed in a clear tank, which helps dogs who having trouble holding up their own weight.
