ARMY LAUNCHES OPERATION BIRD RESCUE

Buffy the burrowing owl
(US Army)

Disposing of chemical weapons is one of the dangerous jobs of the US Army. In Hermiston, Oregon troops at the Army's Umatilla Chemical Depot discovered dozens of pairs of burrowing owls, living in abandoned badger dens, old pipes and other holes dug by small animals and abandoned.

So to protect the birds, troops have started building artificial owl burrows from modern materials that mimic the best features of the badger dens, like dirt floors and mini-bars. Well, maybe not the mini-bars. Called "owl condos," the dens are designed to be coyote-proof. There's no word whether this bird was consulted for the design.
